Dear Parents and Guardians,

Summer is almost here, and we hope your family enjoys a season filled with rest, fun, and meaningful time together. While summer provides a well deserved break from the school year, it is also important that students continue reading to strengthen their literacy skills and maintain academic growth.

Fairfield County School District is excited to continue promoting a love for reading through our Summer Reading Program. This year, students will participate in a Summer Reading Choice Board experience designed to encourage creativity, student voice, and engagement with reading.

Each student will receive three books provided by Fairfield County School District and will be expected to:

1. Read the books over the summer
2. Complete one project based off of one of their books from the appropriate Summer Reading Choice Board for their grade level.

The choice boards provide students with a variety of creative project options, including activities such as podcasts, story maps, book trailers, character profiles, posters, playlists, infographics, and more. These projects are designed to allow students to demonstrate their understanding in fun and meaningful ways while encouraging creativity and critical thinking.

All summer reading projects are due by Tuesday, September 8, 2026. Students who complete and submit a project will receive a test/project grade during the first nine weeks of school.

In addition, students who submit a completed summer reading project will be recognized during a special schoolwide celebration that will take place during the fall semester. We are excited to celebrate our students’ hard work, creativity, and commitment to reading.

The Summer Reading Choice Boards, which include the project directions and rubric, are linked to this letter. Information will also be available on each school’s website and the district website.

We encourage families to support students by setting aside time for reading throughout the summer and discussing books together when possible. Reading regularly helps students strengthen vocabulary, comprehension, imagination, and confidence. We also encourage families to use the Fairfield County Library as a resource when students begin working on their projects.
