Ms. Miller-Waymyers' Class Has An Author Visit
Second graders in Ms. Miller-Waymyers’ class recently enjoyed a very special visit from author Kailanya S. Brailey, who shared her inspiring journey as a writer and lifelong learner. Students were excited to meet a real author and hear firsthand how stories are created.
Ms. Brailey grew up in Livingston, South Carolina, and attended elementary, middle, and high school in the small town of North. She spoke with students about how her family, teachers, and community played an important role in encouraging her to love learning and believe in herself. She explained that the name “North” was special to her—not only because it is where she is from, but also because it represents a direction. She reminded students that no matter where they come from, they can always move “north” toward their goals and dreams.
During her visit, Ms. Brailey introduced students to her popular book series, The Mia Series, which includes Mia Learns to Soar and Mia Finds Her Voice. The series follows a six-year-old girl named Mia who has big dreams while growing up in a small town. Throughout the stories, Mia receives loving advice and encouragement from her parents and her favorite teacher. These important lessons help shape how she sees herself and the world around her.
Ms. Brailey shared how her own childhood experiences inspired her to write about confidence, courage, and perseverance. She encouraged students to read often, write their own stories, and never be afraid to pursue their “greater” unapologetically. She reminded them that their voices matter and that they each have the ability to soar.
The visit was both engaging and inspiring. Students asked thoughtful questions, eagerly listened to story excerpts, and left feeling motivated to follow their dreams—just like Mia. It was a memorable experience that will continue to encourage our young learners to soar toward their own bright futures.
